Udio, created by former Google DeepMind researchers, uses artificial intelligence to allow anyone to quickly create professional-quality music in minutes. Although only previously available as closed beta, this app has already garnered widespread praise from music industry figures like will.i.am, Common, and Kevin Wall.
Udio cofounder and CEO David Ding believes its app will become an indispensable resource for artists seeking to expand their creative output. Ding noted in an interview with VentureBeat: “We have already witnessed talented musicians, producers, and creators utilize it in their iterative process by testing out lyrics or exploring different beats or harmonies,” according to Udio cofounder Ding.
Udio allows users to make music by simply typing out their genre, lyrics, subject matter and identifying artists they want as inspirations. Within 40 seconds, Udio generates a high-quality audio track which they can edit further using its “vary” feature which allows for adjustment in sound and length of track creations.
Udio has instituted safeguards, such as automated copyright filters, to ensure that music created on their platform is original and does not infringe upon any copyrights. Ding underscored this commitment when speaking to VentureBeat; she explained: “Our outputs do not infringe copyrighted material – this team continues to refine their safeguards – yet they remain fully committed to guarantee all works created on Udio are completely original works created from scratch. We are deeply dedicated to this cause!”
Udio has attracted prominent investors such as Andreessen Horowitz and Mike Krieger, co-founder and CTO of Instagram. Krieger expressed his excitement for Udio in a statement sent to VentureBeat: “While still early days, Udio could bring music creation to millions just like Instagram did for photography sharing.
